Interests & Links
Here are suggestions of interesting and useful links as well
as key books (some of us still make use of old media!) concerning
my primary professional interests as well as many (but not
all!) of my avocational concerns. I'm a long-time collector
of books on all of these subjects. If you have good web link
suggestions (or find broken links---these sites were all rechecked
in October 2008), I'd like to hear from you!
Professional (Teaching and Research) Interests:
Electronic Media History (Radio and television broadcasting,
cable, satellite-based and related news and information services
past and present)
Telecommunications History (From the telegraph and telephone
in the 19th century right up to the expanding Web and spectrum-based
technologies of today and tomorrow)
Avocational Pursuits:
Air Transport History ( Airlines and airliners, especially
the pre-jet era from the 1920s to the early 1960s, including
airport history as well)
American Pre-Columbian Archeology (Especially Chaco Canyon
[New Mexico] and Cahokia [east of St. Louis], both of which
are fascinating places to visit)
Classic Cars (1925-1942) (Sometimes called the "Olympians,"
these are the fast and powerful automobiles made both here
and abroad, often with custom coachwork, and that cost a lot
in their time---and far more today!)
Sir Winston S. Churchill (1874-1965: British politician who
served twice as Prime Minister, historian, notable giver of
speeches [later collected in 8 volumes!], and author of more
than 40 books)
Codebreaking (Especially the role of codes in the two World
Wars, and the Venona Cold War project)
Fortification History (Particularly medieval castles, the
coastal fortifications of the 19th and 20th centuries, and
the Maginot Line of the 1930s and related sites)
Passenger (Ocean) Liners (Ships and companies serving on the
major Atlantic and Pacific runs, especially in the period 1890-1940)
Washington DC History (The physical development of one of
the world's first pre-planned cities)
